Criteria

I am looking for an enduring profitable business that provides quality goods or services and is connected with their local community.

If you have an SDVOSB that does not fit the criteria listed below don't worry. I still would love to talk to you as I understand the unique challenges that come with transitioning ownership of these businesses and would love to work with you to find a way to create that opportunity. I qualify as a service-disabled veteran and am open to these opportunities.

$500k-$2 mm EBITDA or Seller's Discretionary Earnings (SDE)

Central Virginia OR New Orleans

My family currently resides in Charlottesville and we love this part of Virginia.  We are also open to businesses near New Orleans, as my wife was born and raised there.

Open to Industry

I am open to most industries and business types but am less intersted in retail and restaurant opportunities.

About Me.

Why do I want to run a small business?

I was a Special Operations Team Leader in NE Syria in 2017 and saw the devastation of the Syrian Civil War and the ISIS occupation.  I saw families displaced by the conflict that were living in tents at temporary refugee camps and spoke with people who were doctors and lawyers and engineers who had their livelihoods upended.  When I first arrived in the town where we were based, the streets were empty.

Six months later, at the end of my deployment, things were different.  A drive through the market area was now a lively event.  We waved at shopkeepers we knew and merchants out selling their goods and services.  This once desolate town started to have a pulse again.  And at the heart of it were small businesses.  It was the grocer re-opening that got people moving again to the market where they got a haircut or had their engine repaired.  Small businesses brought the area back to life.

Thankfully, we in the United States did not have to experience the tragedy of war and oppression but small businesses are still the lifeblood of our economy and I want to be a part of it.

Favorite failure: As a young officer, I failed US Army Jumpmaster School the first time I went.  I knew I wanted the responsibility of leading Paratroopers as they jumped out of a plane and failing was not in the plan.  When I called my commander to tell him the bad news, he told me: "Mark- that's OK.  I believe in you and know you will succeed."  That instilled in me the importance of trust and gave me the confidence to go again.  A few weeks later, after I successfully passed the demanding training, I looked down at a row of Paratroopers inside a C-17 minutes before they jumped out into the night sky.  They all looked at me, trusting that I would keep them safe as they awaited my command to jump, and I knew that the failure was worth it for this opportunity to lead.

Biggest accomplishment: Marrying my wife.  Everything else is just icing on the cake.

When I'm not working, you can find me exploring the wilderness, skiing, or walking my dogs, Kismet and Titus, with my wife.

I started my career as an Infantry Officer in the storied 82nd Airborne Division where I led dozens of soldiers tasked with the mission of being ready to deploy globally with hours notice to meet national security objectives.  I then served as a Civil Affairs Team Leader where I worked with foreign governments, non-military US government entities, and international relief organizations to identify security challenges in civilian populations in the Middle East.  I launched security programs in Iraq, organized the delivery and distribution of over 500,000 tons of humanitarian aid in Northeast Syria, and consulted with the Saudi Arabian Joint Forces Command on conducting relief operations inside Yemen.
